Out of a Filson enthusiasts time capsule, a Vintage Men’s Filson Style 114 Melton Cloth Cruiser Coat Size XL

Union Made and probably dates from the 1960’s. These do not come up for sale in this size and in this condition very often.

A 1960 Filson brochure describes the Melton coat as:

“No. 114  Melton Cloth Cruiser Charcoal color. All wool, 24-oz melton cloth of excellent quality in charcoal color is used to make this attractive Cruiser Coat. Four pockets with flaps and a full carrying pocket across the back.  Fine Filson workmanship and very comfortable full-cut styling.”

 
The coat is used and in very fine condition. No rips, holes or other signs of wear.  Appears to be very lightly used.  The Melton Wool stamps on the inside of the coat do not hold up well with use and the fact that they are very clear and legible suggests little use.

 
The wool is soft and in a beautiful medium dark charcoal color.  All the buttons are present. The coat size tag is unreadable.  Based on the pit to pit measure I’d call this a size 46.  In this era, Filson provided all their outerwear as “Alaska Fit”.  This fit was generous and allowed room for layering and accommodated rigorous cool weather activity.  This coat is generous but not overly humongous as outerwear for someone who regularly wears a size 46 or an XL.

As a reference, our reluctant model stands about 6’ 1” on a good day, tips the scales at about 205 lbs. and wears a 46 long in a sport coat and generally a 46 extra-long or 48 in Filson outerwear.
