Cohen hailed from New York City.  As a wunderkind, he was sent to Chicago to study at Chicago Musical College with Werner Eduard Heimendahl, a noted violinist, conductor and protege of Theodore Thomas.  As of 1884, Cohen was teaching at Chicago Musical College founded by Florenz Ziegfeld's father.  He concertized in solo recitals and with orchestra in the Chicago area regularly at this point.

Cohen went to Germany for further study in 1885, first in Leipzig at the Conservatory with Hans Sitt.  He went the following year to Berlin where he studied at the Scharwenka Konservatorium where he remained until 1889.  There is record and reviews of his performances there, however, his professor is unknown.  He performed the Mendelssohn concerto with the Berlin Philharmonic in January, 1888 to outstanding reviews. He returned to the United States in 1895 and settled in New York City at 69 West 113th Street where he offered himself out as a violin pedagogue.
