This is for an original 1938 Goudey #270 card of Cincinnati
Reds Hall of Fame catcher Ernie Lombardi which has been encapsulated and graded
by PSA as NM+ 7.5. After failing to put out a baseball card set in 1937, Goudey
returned to the forefront of the card market with a 48 card set which was made up
of two 24 card subsets with both sets featuring the same players. Goudey would start
the numbering of the set at 241 since their 1934 set left off at 240. This set
would be called the “Heads Up” set since the size of the players heads were exaggerated
on their bodies. The first 24 card subset features the player on the card along
with the name and team under the artwork. The second subset would feature the
same image but with added drawn images and comments in the background. The
second subset featuring cards numbered 265 through 288 are considered rarer
than the first subset. Either way, the 48 card Heads Up set is known as R323
and are extremely scarce, and even rarer in high grade. This is the only 7.5 on
the PSA Population Report with only nine 8’s and two 8.5’s ahead of it with no
9’s or 10’s in existence. Take a good close up look at it and see if it deserves
a resubmit or crack it out and send it to SGC or BVG. Just a half point or a
full point is worth thousands of dollars, maybe 10’s of thousands. A great card
for the high end collector.
