P51A Mustang / A36 Apache used Allison V1710 engines in the CBI, North Africa, and Italy, and were excellent at low levels. It had 4x .50cal MGs. P51A used a N3B sight w A1 head.

P51B/C Mustang – Packard Merlin V1650-1 similar to Merlin XX for 441mph at 29,800 feet. These were ready for the first U.S. heavy bomber strike against Berlin in March 1944. P51B/C used a N3B or N9 sight; P51B had 4x .50cal MGs and A36 bomb rack/external drop tank. Combat radius = 900mi w 2x 75gal drop tanks + 85gal behind pilot's seat.

P51D Mustang - Packard Merlin V1650-7, similar to Merlin 66 could reach range of 1000 miles. P51D became the ‘ace-maker’ with K14 gunsight for it’s 6x M2 .50cal MGs. By early 1945, P51Ds were flying over European, Pacific, and CBI theaters. In Europe, Mustangs destroyed 4,950 enemy aircraft in the air, more than any other USAAF fighter in Europe.

Iwo Jima-based P51Ds started flying escort for B29s and low-level fighter-bomber missions against ground targets in Japan.

Korea – F51Ds with 'paddle props' flew from Japan to hit targets in Korea that short-ranged F80s could not reach. F51 fighter-bomber units flew close support and interdiction missions in Korea until they were largely replaced by F86s.
