P40B/C / Tomahawk Mk.IIA/B – used by RAF in North Africa and US over Pearl Harbor. CAMCO sent 100 P40 Tomahawks to Chennault’s Flying Tigers (courtesy Soong Mei-ling). These P40s retained Superflexit self sealing fuel tanks of the P40C, but had the heavy belly tank removed. The Allison V1710-33 engine was newly ‘Blueprinted’ to yield more than the rated 1300hp. They showed up with old post & ring sight, no radios and no wing guns. Multinational mechanics installed ‘long barrel’ Browning .30cals and civil radios. They were flown well past their scheduled maintenance. To this day, the AVG was the soundest investment China ever made.

P40E / Kittyhawk Mk.I  was the best fighter available in large numbers when World War II began. It was slower and less maneuverable than its adversaries, but had a reputation for extreme ruggedness. P40Es engaged Japanese aircraft over the Philippines in December 1941. P40Es served with the AAF Flying Tigers later in 1942, and with the 99th Fighter Squadron in North Africa in 1943. The solid, reliable P40 was used worldwide through 1944.

P40N Warhawk was the most produced, fastest at 378 mph below 12,000 feet, and fly a long way with ADF and radio Compass. P40N was light weight, still had 6x .50cal MGs, and could carry either bombs or drop tanks.
