Description

Up for bids is an antique obsolete brass padlock that has in raised letters which read "US - Reg'd Mail" on one side and what appears to be a serial number (H 3138) stamped on the opposite side.  The lock was use by the postal service to protect registered mail in bags.  The padlock has a counter that changes one  number each time the shackle is opened.   Brief Internet research seemed to indicate that this padlock was made by the Smith & Egge Co. (Bridgeport, CT) likely sometime between 1884 and 1898.    The piece measures 2 5/8" tall to the top of the shackle, 2 1/8" wide, and 1 1/4" from front to back.  Please see the photographs to determine exactly what you will receive.
