For sale is a superb and rare open salt dish / cellar / trencher made by Saint Cloud during the first half of the 18th century . It is made of soft paste porcelain which normally is a really nice creamy off white color but this one here is more greyish blue. This and the fact that it seems to have a huge firing flaw either means it is a really early piece or possibly a Rouen piece??? The salt dish is hand painted with an under glaze blue decoration known as Rayonnant style that is really nice and quite typical for this maker. The edge of the top and bottom rim has a ribbed design to it, a large circular design in the top center, a nice trim to the top inside as well as around the top and bottom outside edge and a superb design along the center of the outside. Just a really nice looking piece! The piece is nice but has a chip to the top inside edge as shown and the center has broken out in the top and a bigger one underneath. There is still some sort of material covering the whole and to me it looks like the paste had a massive impurity in that spot that during the firing made the porcelain over the top and bottom blow out. It does not look like an added filler as it would be flush on either of the sides if not both. Could easily be fixed by a good restorer and is a rare survivor from this maker. The salt dish is not marked but that is very normal pretty. The piece is just under 2 inches tall and has a bottom diameter of 3.25 inches. French France St-Cloud Salznapf Saliere
