The Royal Canadian Military Institute is the current name of an organization that was previously called the Canadian Military Institute and then the Canadian Officers' Club and Institute.  It is a private membership club headquartered in Toronto.  It was founded in 1890 "to provide in an institute for the defence forces of Canada a Library, museum and club for the purposes of the promotion of military art, science and literature, to gather and preserve the records of the defence forces, and develop its specialized field in Canadian history."  The motto of the R.C.M.I. is Fidelis Per Manere (to remain faithful).  Originally, membership was limited to male officers and ex-officers.  Today, membership is open to men and women, military or non-military.
