A very good copy of the 1940 First Edition of Hemingway's classic "For Whom the Bell Tolls" lacking the dust jacket. A first printing from Charles Scribner's Sons, New York with the "A" on the copyright page. 8vo. 471 pages - Publishers heavy beige linen boards, blocked and titled in red and black on spine, with Hemingway's facsimile signature stamped in black on front cover with brown topstain. Corners lightly bumped, spine tips softened, sunning with a bit of fading to spine print and a a couple of small spots on the front board with some sunning to the upper rear cover. The interior is in nice condition with typical toning from adhesive along the endpage gutters, a previous owner name in ink on the front pastedown and a stamped name on front and rear endpapers, the half-title and several other pages. Overall, a very good copy of the true first edition and the basis for the 1943 Acadamy Award nominated film directed by Sam Wood and starring Gary Cooper and Ingrid Bergman that now ranks among the top 100 popular movies of all time.
