"Career
06.10.1881: Launched.
31.12.1881: Registered.
05.01.1882: Left her builders as Shannon for The Peninsular and Oriental Steam
Navigation Company. She was the first P&O ship with a hurricane
deck and their last with an iron hull, she tended to lurch, a
characteristic which P&O and Harland & Wolff disputed
responsibility, and which was solved by filling her bilges with bricks –
carefully loaded, she proved a good sea boat. She was supposed
sister to the other River-class ships Clyde, Ganges, Sutlej and
Thames, but was 3.05m (10ft) longer and had only two masts
instead of three.
19.01.1882: Maiden voyage from London to Sydney, though in fact she spent
more of her time on the Bombay run.
23.05.1884: Re-measured. 4,077 grt, 2,050 nrt, deadweight 3,899 tons. 163 first
class and 58 second class passenger capacity. Cargo capacity
3,311 cubic metres (116,948 cubic feet).
1894: Yards removed.
23.01.1896: In collision with the powder hulk Thalia off Royal Albert Dock,
London but without significant damage. Thalia was reported to have
broken her moorings and ran aground above Tripcock Point.
1898: A case of plague was reported aboard.
1900: Was to have been sold, but the deal collapsed and she was laid up
in Victoria Dock.
07.1901: Sold at auction for £10,706 to Essafji Tajbhoy Borah, Bombay, and
reported renamed Procter.
12.1901: Sold to shipbreakers at Bombay. "
