First Ever RCA Service Co Inc RED BOOK, Theatre Television Handbook For Projectionist. Camden, New Jersey, 1945. Paperback.
Stated first edition. Original covers, 8 1/2 x 11 inches, 104 pp, well illustrated with black and white drawings and photographs.
An interesting look at a technology that virtually died in the crib. Following the demonstration of television at the 1939 World's Fair, RCA built a projection system that produced an excellent picture on a 9 x 12 foot screen. In December of 1940, a large screen TV system was installed in the New Yorker Theatre on Times Square, and operated for nearly a year. During this time, the results were viewed by leaders of the motion picture industry, high government officials and press representatives, as well as the public. The programs ranged from studio presentations at Radio City to boxing matches via coaxial cable from Madison Square Garden, wrestling via high frequency relay from Jamaica, Queens, and even parade ground maneuvers at Camp Upton, 60 miles away, via three radio relay repeaters. A nationwide system of theater television was envisioned, with signals carried mainly on coaxial cable, and radio transmission being considered. It was anticipated that people would flock to the theaters to enjoy various sporting events and shows as they then were to the movies. Obviously, the revolution in home televsion was not anticipated, making this an interesting, and quite rare relic of a forgotten technology. Consists of historical background and plans for the future, delivering the program, the big screen television projector, fundamentals of electronics, theatre TV theory and practice, operating the projector, lists of stations, both in existence and pending (by State) , and first aid. Early television; science; entertainment; big screen TV
