This journal treats the world of art music and directs itself to the collector ''who is curious about the material he or she has gathered together, and who wishes either to share knowledge or learn more about the origins and history of events within the recording industry.'' Recordings in any format comprise its scope, with coverage of CDs limited to reissues from earlier formats. The editor writes: ''We see it as our role to try and preserve firsthand information and recollections, to make factual information available for the first time, and to encourage research'' (No. 1, May 1995, p. 1). The vinyl reissue of older LPs and the CD reissues of ''pre-digital material'' provide coverage of recordings currently available through retail outlets.

Some of the regular columns include ''Collector News,'' ''Letter from America,'' ''Continental Report,'' and ''Far Eastern Viewpoint,'' and are joined by letters from readers and reviews of books as well as recordings. Feature articles and briefer reports on archives, events, and recording sessions round out the journal. Recent articles have focused on conductors, performers, and recording companies. This journal is sure to find a wide audience among recording enthusiasts and will be useful for collections supporting historical recordings and the research opportunities such collections provide.

Based in London, the magazine was founded as International Classical Record Collector in 1995, later renamed Classical Recordings Quarterly and Classic Record Collector. The magazine contains articles about artists and their recordings from the start of recording history through to the 1960s. There is also a letters page, reviews of new DVD and CD issues of pre-digital material, new LP and 78rpm repressings and books.

Extended articles on the Kingsway Hall and on William Barrington-Coupe's record labels appeared, as well as features on a wide range of artists such as Louis Cahuzac, Tancredi Pasero, Montserrat Caballé, the Ballets Russes, the Griller Quartet, Albert Spalding and Oskar Fried, as well as many others.

Alan Sanders served as editor for the first two years from 1995–1997, after which Tully Potter was editor until 2008 (when he became Contributing editor), when Sanders returned to edit the magazine.[5]

Contributors
Classical Recordings Quarterly employed a network of reviewers mainly from the UK and the USA, along with regular columns by Shuichiro Kawai (Japan) 'Far Eastern Viewpoint', Norbert Hornig (Germany) 'Continental Report', and a 'Letter from America' by Mortimer H Frank. The magazine was printed in A5 size, with colour photos, and each edition consists of around 100 pages.
