A very good copy of this sought-after 1899 Charles Scribner & Sons illustrated edition of Moby Dick or the Whale. According to (Tanselle) this is the Third Edition of Moby Dick following the original Harper & Brothers 1852 1st and U.S. Book Company edition of 1892. Part of Scribner's popular "Famous Novels of the Sea." A first printing with the "Seahorse" designed binding and the same dates to the title and copyright page. Condition: 8vo. 492 pages followed by the Etymology and Extracts. Publishers' green cloth boards with gilt stamped titles to the spine. Featuring the four illustrations by I.W. Taber including the tissue-guarded front featuring Moby Dick. Just light edgewear with the corners rubbed and bumped and some softening to the spine tips. The interior is clean and unmarked with light toning to the page edges and some creasing to the upper corners of the last few pages. Overall, a very nice copy of this increasingly scarce edition of the Melville classic.
