Commemorates the 350th anniversary of the first English child born in America, and the first attempted English settlement, at Roanoke Island, North Carolina.
 
The Birth of the First English Child in the New World
This stamp was issued to celebrate the 350th anniversary of the founding of the Colony of Roanoke Island in July 1587, as well as the birth of the first English child in the New World, Virginia Dare. She was born on August 18, 1587, and was named Virginia in what may have been the first christening ceremony in America.
 
The Roanoke Island colony has become known as the “Lost Colony,” as its members disappeared sometime before 1590. No one knows exactly what happened to its 117 members. Some historians believe the colonists may have joined American Indian tribes living in the region. The only clue as to the fate of the colonists was the word “CROATOAN” carved into the side of a large tree.
