What is Saw Palmetto
Saw palmetto is a type of palm tree that grows in the warm climate of the southeast coast of the U.S.
Saw palmetto remedies contain an extract taken from the berries of the tree. Traditionally, Native Americans of the Seminole tribe ate berries from the saw palmetto tree to ease urinary and reproductive problems, among other ailments.

A study found that saw palmetto berry extract prevents prostate complications by increasing p53 protein production.
Sex Drive
Testosterone plays a role in both men and women's sex drive. It is linked to fertility because it affects the production of both sperm and eggs.
As such, people may take saw palmetto in an attempt to increase their testosterone levels. This can help them experience an increased libido or a greater desire for sex.
Hair Loss
Saw palmetto is commonly used to treat hair loss caused by male-pattern baldness. Male-pattern baldness is the loss of hair in men due to genetics and too much dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
Testosterone is converted into dihydrotestosterone (DHT) by the 5-reductase enzyme. Saw palmetto blocks this enzyme, which decreases DHT and increases hair growth

One study saw a significant increase in testosterone after three months of 320 mg saw palmetto.
An unblinded study in 32 men found that 80 mg saw palmetto extract twice a day for six days increased testosterone levels compared to placebo.
