This is an unbelievably rare find of carved wood, musical weather chalet mantel or desk clock that was created in "Germany" about 70 years ago. And it shows very little signs of use. I haven't seen another even even remotely close to this one is 30 years or more. It's the perfect mantel or desk clock and even works well as a musical alarm clock. It's a very impressive clock and equally so in size measuring about 9" at its highest point, about 4" or so at its deepest, and about 13" overall in length. The clock is made entirely of carved Linden wood and looks very much like an old mountain chalet like many that still dot the landscape in the German Black Forest or French Alps. The roof has simulated boulders and timbers that keep the roof on for the full size homes during nasty weather. There is a wooden chimney on top as well which is also used to initially set the weather house characters below. There are factory instructions for doing this on the back of the clock case. The base is loaded with simulated colorful gravel and several mushrooms, and a large colorful flower. There is a wooden wood shed on the far left and a stack of logs under it and a light switch button just in front of it. It does have a light (under the roof) and a battery box to power it on the back of the clock but I don't have a battery to test it. There is a wooden bench on the base as well with a colorful wooden bird o it and wooden carved trees to the far right. The wooden people in the open doorway have a thermometer between them but I'm not sure that it works. It is intact, however. What's really cool is when it's a nice day, the colorful wooden lady appears in the right doorway and when it's not too good a day, the colorful wooden man appears in the doorway to the left...and it works too! The windows and pottery vases are all wood as well and appear to to be hand painted too. The dial of the clock is wooden too and features a black background and raised Roman Numerals to mark the hours and matching fancy hands to point out the time; and a red hand to use to set the working alarm. The back of the clock case is wood too and there is a brass winder in the middle to wind the high quality, Swiss "Gueissaz" music box that awakens you to an excellent rendition of the very famous tune, "Au clair de la lune" (Clair de Lune). There is a factory label on the back identifying the song title and Gueissaz manufacture. The back of the clock itself is brass metal and all hardware, time setting knobs, and winders are present. There is also a slow/fast adjustment lever on the back in case the clock timing ever needs to be recalibrated. The clock works just fine here, keeps good time, and the music is heavenly. But keep in mind this is an older clock, not a new one and it does seem to be working pretty well here for a 70 year-old clock but all antique clocks do require maintenance. We don't know the service history but the movement does show signs of past service. Nonetheless, we always advise our clock customers to service their vintage or antique clocks at least once every three years. Doing so will preserve a classic clock like this one and keep it running strong for years to come. I’ve looked the clock over fairly well and find very little signs of use and no damage or missing parts. It is truly a breathtaking clock with a fabulous patina, and is just gorgeous on display! This clock is a wonderful look back at the greatness of Black Forest workmanship and is certain to capture the imagination of anyone seeing or hearing it in your home, office or wherever it is that you care to showcase a magnificent, antique, mechanical Black Forest timepiece with a solid history behind it.
