Item Description

Here is a great Antique English Travelling Desk for your buying consideration. Would make a great gift or keep it for yourself.  


For your consideration is this Antique English Travelling Desk in very nice condition.  The wood case has a great luster to it.  The Case has an inlaid and marquetry designs on both the top and front of it.  The brass lock is in place, no key.  There are also carrying handles on both sides, all there on one side the hanging is not on the other side.  Just the plate attached to the wood case.


The veneer on top of the case shows some cracking in places, probably from exposure to light over the decades.  None of the inlay is missing, the desk still looks and shows well.  Bottom trim is in place on all four sides, no cracks or repairs.   Probably not quite accurate to call a laptop desk.  Meant to set on a surface and then fold out the writing surface to utilize.


My guess is this piece dates to the mid to latter 1800s, you be the judge before buying.  This lap desk is beautiful.  Very nice wood and graining.  The inside folding pieces are still all there as well.  The hinges are all there and everything is securely attached.  The lock and latch and the brass piece around the key hole are there, the case did not come with a key.   The key hole probably had a grommet around it at one time and a repair to the wood to the right side of the key hole.
A green leather that shows some wear on the inside of the lid to hold pens and then on the fold out writing surface. 
 An older glass inkwell with a brass top comes with the case as well.  The glass inkwell has chips along the bottom of the glass base.

Both sides of the lap desk open for storage.  Has open areas for one ink bottle and then there are two pull out small drawers below that.  Nice slotted areas for filing and storing ones documents as well.  We see no maker's mark on the lock mechanism, does say "Secure Lock" incised in it.  


Some loss to the finish and scratching on the front of the top cover.  Two scratches on the front of the case that run from the top to the bottom, see pic.

The Travelling Lap Desk measures 12-3/8" wide, 7-7/8" tall, and is 8" wide.   Don't miss out on this unique item.  There is no secret drawer in this writing desk that we can ascertain.  The writing desk does have a lock, but no key.  This desk is very pretty and unique.  Don't miss out on this item, just hit the Buy It Now button.

Returns Policy

  • Returns are accepted by seller within 30 days of receipt of item by buyer.  The Buyer will be assessed a 15% restocking fee of the Item and Shipping Cost should they decide to return this item for whatever the reason..
  • In accordance with eBay's buyer protection program, the purchase price plus original shipping cost will be refunded to the buyer once the item has been received by the seller, minus the 15% restocking fee noted.
  • Buyer is responsible for the return shipping cost and any applicable insurance cost.
