Austria, Vienna, St. Stephen's church, bronze medal (59 mm) by Jacques Wiener (1815-99), 1861

From the series of the "Medals of the Most Remarkable Edifices of Europe"; Wiener planned to produce fifty such medals, but only 41 designs were completed. The work is much celebrated, especially the precise details and the perfectly executed perspective.

Extraordinarily, Wiener's work on the Cologne cathedral medal overlapped with the construction of the building, and he re-engraved his dies as the building work progressed, resulting in multiple versions of the medal. The obverse shows the state of construction in 1861, with the famous medieval crane still in place (it was finally removed in 1868), while the reverse shows the planned completed state, much as the current building stands.

EF+, glossy, a few minor marks. Rare.
