By way of 66 satellites in low earth orbit, the Iridium Network allows telephone, text and data services from any location world wide - these phones are designed to be used in isolated regions that have no other forms of communications. Some of the other satellite services only have coverage at certain times of the day or over land areas - Iridium works everywhere at any time!
Motorola Iridium 9505A phones are used for voice and messaging applications in the most demanding military, civilian, diplomatic and disaster operations. The 9505A handset is made by Motorola in the USA and they are noted for reliability and performance in difficult conditions. Iridium supports voice, SMS and SMS to email services.
This particular kit contains everything needed for remote communications requirements. The kit includes –
This phone came from a transport user and is in overall very good condition. The keypad and display have minimal wear and the top and side rubber protective edges show some nicks and scrapes along with some general scuff marks on the plastic case but it is still very presentable and operates normally. Included is a soft leather belt clip case, external antenna adapter and a magnetic roof mount antenna with 1.5 meter cable. The two batteries are brand new CS-IRD505SL (equivalent to the BAT0601). The chargers and USB charging cables are brand new.
The handset is NOT currently subscribed to any Iridium service. To use the handset, you will need a SIM card that allows registration to the Iridium network. These are available as Pre Paid or Post Paid, with various voice, messaging and data plans as needed. For example, Telstra and Pivotel offer Iridium services and there are other plans available. You can also use a Telstra Post Paid SIM that has international roaming enabled the phone will register to the Iridium network using you AU mobile number (+614XX XXX XXX) - voice call costs are around $4.00 a minute and text messages $0.50, but it's often a better option for irregular usage rather than paying for a dedicated Iridium plan.
If you are considering using your Telstra SIM, for a long time the Telstra Post-Paid (NOT Pre-Paid!) SIM cards that had International Roaming enabled worked perfectly in the 9505A handsets. The phone would register to the Iridium satellite network but still used the Telstra AU number. This used to work with no issues until recently when we noticed that the phones would send and receive text messages and be able to accept voice calls but would not originate voice calls. We have since found it is due to a new setting Telstra are applying where Voice Over LTE (VOLTE) appears to be enabled by default which seems to break the outbound voice calling. The fix is to ask Telstra to turn off VOLTE on the phone account.
If you are living in or travelling to remote locations then this kit is the ideal way to maintain communications. Iridium phones are the best satellite handsets for use in the Australian outback or for blue water sailing.
