- Outstanding 18th Century (1700s, Georgian or before) large pitcher.
- Strikingly graceful shape.
- Truly harmonious as the handle balances the shape of the flange and creates a fluid negative space.
- Hand forged by a blacksmith.
- Copper, washed with thin silver plate.
- Copper shows through on the edges, bottom, and through the etching.
- Copper is ghosting through in places, which gives the surface a gorgeous, lively finish that takes the light beautifully.
- Rustically etched on the front with 3 lambs sitting in bushes, from a "Sheep May Safely Graze" proverb.
- Given me by a friend whose family considered this a family heirloom: They had it longer than anyone could remember. Family stems ancestrally from Germany and England.
- One can imagine this is the kind of pitcher that would have filled Marie Antoinette's bath at Le Hameau, her lux, glamping cabin in which she pretended to be a simple peasant shepherdess!
- Measures 12.5" tall X 5.25" diameter X 9.5" wide with handle.
- Exceptional patina, warm and resonant, with a softness that reflects the compression of hand use.
