Photo meas. approx.: 7.75"x 9.75"

Period date on front of photo: October 6, 1935

Original period writing on back of photo: "Ray Schanhals - one of the Coast's famous flyers who will stunt at the big Northwest Aviation Meet at Swan Island this afternoon. Photo by Jones Photo Laboratory."

Original period newspaper piece on reverse: "Ray Schanhals, noted Pacific coast aviator, whose plane will perform over Swan Island airport with many others this afternoon in the Northwest Aviation meet sponsored by the Aero Club of Oregon."

From oregonlive.com: "Schanhals is a famous acrobatic pilot who saw service in the Canadian air corps during the world war," The Eugene Register-Guard wrote in 1934. Schanhals was arguably Oregon's foremost aviation booster in the 1930s; he regularly fronted stunt-flying exhibitions and led air tours to draw more "sportsmen" to take up flying as a hobby. The Eugene paper pointed out that Schanhals made his living as "an insurance man." It wasn't mentioned whether he insured his fellow pilots."

Photo is from a large lot of original period press photos! They are not from the Brown Bros. archive. Please see my other listings of original aviation press photos, including many Lindbergh photos. Always happy to combine shipping, just message me!
