Offered is a formidable, signed art nouveau bronze planter in the form of a large ewer. Created by the well-known French sculptor Alfred Jean Foretay (1861-1944) as A. Foretay as shown. I believe this incredible signed bronze ewer is in fact a planter by design but might also function as a large candle holder. Shaped like a large ewer, with a vine-shaped handle and floral decoration. This beautiful piece of art is 23" tall, 13" maximum width across the vine-like handle. It has a 10" diameter base and weighs 20 lbs. It has a thin brass liner which can hold a small plant or a large candle up to 3" in diameter, and a false bottom with holes in it, probably to allow for drainage since it was found being used outside as a planter. The interior liner is 11" below the top of the handle.  There is a multi-colored patina, it has a warm brass color inside with green, brown and blue used for the vine and flowers decoration. I'm not sure if the patina was applied chemically or by cold-painting. In either case, it has held up very nicely after a century of use in a wealthy Palm Beach estate's garden. In the beautiful condition shown with no damage or imperfection as shown in the photos.
