First paperback edition of The Amboy Dukes, by Irving Shulman (Avon, 1948). This classic novel of a street gang made up of Jewish teenagers living in Brooklyn in the 1940s was a sensation at the time of its publication. Its realistic portrayal of the gang members engaging in crime, sex, and drug use shocked the public and led to the novel being banned in many schools. It was also a huge success, though, selling over 5 million copies. The Amboy Dukes was adapted into the 1949 film, The City Across the River, which included the first screen appearance of Tony Curtis. A vintage find!
