The second of Spillane's novel featuring the tough-guy detective Mike Hammer, this novel finds Hammer investigating the death of a red-headed prostitute, only to uncover a massive prostitution ring operating in New York City. This book was the inspiration for the 1957 film by the same name, though the film swerves into a storyline concerning a cache of jewels stolen by the Nazis in WWII.
