The Life of Napoleon Bonaparte in 4 Volumes

by William Henry Ireland 1828

George Cruikshank Illustrations

Publisher - Cumberland, Printer - Marchant

Item Description

Here is a nice rare and uncommon complete 1st edition 4 volume set of books about Napoleon Bonaparte by W. H. Ireland for your buying consideration.  Would make a great gift or keep for yourself!

As a side bar, my wife and I do not think the recent movie did much historical justice in capturing whom Napoleon was, but that is just our personal opinions.

Not many times that you will see this set of books made available.  Only 1 other on the online sites we look to and research from and that is a newer edition.  These books are almost 200 years old and in very good condition for their age.

This fine set of Antique Books is being offered to you at a price below what you would see in a high end auction house or gallery.  We have been selling fine items out of our home for over 35 years.  We can therefore better control our acquisition costs, keep commission costs low (if applicable), and finally, we don't have the overhead that the higher end houses and galleries pass on to their clients.

Beautifully bound set of the complete 4 volumes of these books, as noted on the title page.  .  These books were printed in 1828, which makes them a first edition for hard cover issued books.  Understand there were paper editions of these books issued as early as 1823.  The books were written by William Henry Ireland.  Many of the illustrations were done by George Cruikshank.  Published by John Cumberland.  The books were printed by Marchant.

The four books had clear plastic covers on them.  Have done a nice job of protecting the books over the years.  The title pages are in all 4 books.  There are 5 - 3 section fold out plates.  Brown calf's leather and marbled hardcovers.  The inside of the covers and first blank page are done in a dark bluish green color.  Some minor crackling of the leather.  Says "Life of Napoleon", author's name, volume number, and year on the spine of each book.  Cannot say if these are the original hardcovers or not.  The page edges on all four volumes are done in a gold gilt as well, some minor loss.

The pages of this set are in good shape.  Contents page vii in volume 4 is torn.  Tear on one of the seams of an illustration in volume 1.  Pages are not brittle or coming apart, still have lots of flexibility. Some minor wear/tear in places, but no parts or full pages missing that we have identified.  The books were stored well over the years.  Some minor foxing, browning and soiling to the pages from use and age.  Cannot say if all the illustrations are there or not.

The books have all their hardcovers.  The covers are attached to the spine.   Some cracking at the hinges.  No musty or mildew smell to the books.  No watermarks in the books either.  The pages are all very professionally bound together.  Some pencil markings on inside of blank page in front of volume 1, see pic.

Each book is 8.5" tall, by 5.5" across, by approximately 1-3/8" to 1.5" wide.  There are 475 pages in volume 1, 556 pages in volume 2, 600 pages in volume 3, and 542 pages in volume 4.  Let us know if you have any questions or need additional pictures.  Don’t be shy to make an offer, we are always open to reasonable suggestions.
