For sale is a nice plate made by one of the many factories
copying the Royal Vienna beehive / shield mark. This one was made in the
late 19th / early 20th century in Austria or possibly Germany ! The
center is hand painted with a nice scene of Amor and Ariadne titled
Ariadne von Theseus verlassen . I have seen these scenes also labelled
as Ariadne mourning (or grieving) . Seems that the story behind that has
different interpretations so if you are interested look it up online. A
good quality scene! The rim has a pink ground color which is a bit
unusual with the typical fancy gold designs on top and some raised white
enamel dots. Looks great! These types of plates are very elegant and
decorative which is why they are so popular. The plate is in perfect
condition with just some very minor use marks to the gilding. It is
9.375 inches in diameter and 1 inch tall so a very nice size. It is
marked with a blue shield / beehive type mark underneath as well as the
title in red, an impressed number 5,
another impressed mark I cannot make out and an area where the glaze is
gone and one can see a faint residue of another beehive mark. Austrian Szenenteller 19thC 20thC
