First U.S. paperback edition of Fanny Hill: Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure, by John Cleland (Berkley, 1965). Originally written in 1748, Fanny Hill is widely considered the first original work of prose pornography in English. The book was illicitly published several times over the centuries, but was officially published in an uncensored version for the first time in 1963. The book was met with immediate legal challenges, but was still successful enough for Berkley to publish this paperback edition in 1965. A year later, in 1966, the Supreme Court that the book was not, in fact, obscene. Which means that this edition was the last one published under the cloud of potential legal reprimand. The book is remarkably tame by today's standards, of course, but it remains (as the cover states) "the most famous banned book of all time."

This book is in very good condition, with some slight wear to the cover but with a tight spine and no major signs of wear.
