Giovanni
Dalessi (Eindhoven, 1964) undeniably belongs to the upper segment of Dutch
realism. His meaningful works are loved by a large audience. Because he is able
to put his own personal stamp on time-honored themes such as portrait, still
life and landscape, he distinguishes himself from his colleagues. Giovanni
takes the subjects of his paintings from his immediate environment. His own
family, wife and five children are the inspiration for his work. However, he
does not paint them with the intention of depicting them as faithfully as
possible. He paints much more the essence of everyday scenes; his works express
love and security. The undefined spatiality, the cut-off of his scenes and,
above all, the perspective, make Dalessi's paintings strong and fascinating. He
omits unnecessary details that are disturbing to him. In a shallow, almost
indistinct backdrop, he presents his performance. He plays with the flat
surface, where there is hardly any hierarchy between foreground and background.
The result is that his figures and scenes have a very strong expressive power.
As a viewer you only focus on what is depicted and nothing distracts you from
the main theme. Giovanni is Artist of the Year 2013.
