DELPHIN MASSIER was an artist born in 1836 and died in 1907, a member of the Massier family, a dynasty of ceramists established in Vallauris since the 17th century.
The family pottery tradition began with Pierre Massier (1707-1748) and then with Jacques Massier (1806-1871), who gave the workshop a new life. In fact, his factory, which at first was a simple workshop with a utilitarian vocation, stood out from locally produced tanks to innovative and artistic production.
In Vallauris they introduced a ceramic art and in particular, an improvement of their art thanks to the arrival of the Italian potter Gondolfi Gaetano in 1859. He taught Delphin and his brother Clément (1844-1917) numerous techniques, such as plaster molds and decorative arts of enameled earthenware, achieving the family with these prodigal sons, the period of greatest recognition in its history.
Artistic ceramists and entrepreneurs, the Massiers also became known thanks to their elaborate sales catalogues, which today allow us to appreciate the diversity of their productions and identify their models.
