Ernst Heinrich Wilhelm Stephan war ein deutscher Generalpostdirektor des Deutschen Reiches und Mitbegründer des Weltpostvereins. Das Porträt zeigt ihn als Staatssekretär des Reichspostamts. Er übernahm das Amt des Generalpostmeisters zum 1. Januar 1876. Im Jahr 1877 ließ er erste Fernsprechversuche in Berlin zwischen dem Generalpostamt und dem Generaltelegrafenamt durchführen; dies gilt als Geburtstag der Telephonie in Deutschland. Er baute zwischen 1877 und 1881 das Telephonnetz in Deutschland auf und wurde 1885 durch Kaiser Wilhelm I. in den Adelsstand erhoben; unter der Darstellung mit faksimilierter Unterschrift.

  • Description: Source: Das Buch von der Weltpost Verlag von Herm. J. Meidinger, Berlin. Ernst Heinrich Wilhelm Stephan was a German Postmaster General of the German Empire and co-founder of the Universal Postal Union. The portrait shows him as State Secretary of the Reichspostamt. He took over the postmaster general's office on 1 January 1876. In 1877, he had the first long-distance telephone trials carried out in Berlin between the General Post Office and the General Telegraph Office; this is considered the birthday of telephony in Germany. He built up the telephone network in Germany between 1877 and 1881 and was raised to the peerage by Kaiser Wilhelm I in 1885; under the illustration with facsimile signature.
