  • Beschreibung: Der französische Maler Pierre-Alexandre Wille (1748 Paris - 1821 ebd.) war Sohn des Hofkupferstechers des Königs Ludwig XV. Johann Georg Wille (1715 bei Gießen - 1808 Paris) und erfuhr früh eine künstlerische Ausbildung. Bis zur Französischen Revolution schuf er, auch im Umfeld des französischen Hofes, zahlreiche Bilder mit Genremotiven oder mit politischem Inhalt. Seine Darstellungen zeichnen sich durch den meisterhaften Umgang mit Gewandfalten und der Darstellung von Stofflichkeit aus sowie die ausdrucksstarke Gestaltung von Mimik und Emotionen.Das vorliegende Blatt wurde von dem auf Porträts spezialisierten französischen Kupferstecher Louis-Jacques Cathelin gestochen und zeigt eine sitzende aristokratische Dame mit einem faltenreichen, pelzverbrämten Mantel und einem eleganten Kopfputz. Sie hat den Blick, scheinbar einer spontanen Gefühlsregung folgend, gen Himmel gehoben und die linke Hand in hilfesuchender Handlungsunfähigkeit geöffnet.Grund für diese hier meisterhaft in Kupfer umgesetzte Erregung könnte der Brief in der Rechten der Dame sein, den sie offenbar erst gerade aus seinem Versteck in einer Dose gezogen hat. Der Inhalt ist nicht zu entziffern aber offenbar von schockierender Wirkung. Auf einem verzierten Schrank an der Wand hinter der Dame ist eine kleine Porzellanfigur eines Asiaten zu sehen, der die Dame mit ausgestrecktem Finger zu verhöhnen scheint. Die gefühlsbetonte Szene ist von einem fingierten Rahmen oval gefasst und von Rosen- und Lilienblüten umgeben. Auf einem Medaillon am Fuß des Rahmens ist eine miniaturisierte Szene eines Segelbootes in Seenot zu sehen. Es handelt sich um ein sehr schönes Blatt, das als Probedruck noch vor der Schrift (avant la lettre) entstanden ist.

  • Zustand: Sehr guter Zustand. Insbesondere auf dem Blattrand sind blasse Verfärbugnen sichtbar. Die Darstellung durchzieht eine unscheinbare vertikale und eine kurze horizontale Knickspur mit stellenweiser Bereibung des Druckes. Entlang der Kanten ist das Papier teils deutlich berieben, stellenweise geknickt und an vereinzelter Stelle eingerissen. Entlang der rechten Blattkante ist die Kante der Druckplatte eingerissen. Die Farbigkeit ist frisch erhalten.

  • Description: The French painter Pierre-Alexandre Wille (1748 Paris - 1821 ibid.) was the son of the court copper engraver of King Louis XV Johann Georg Wille (1715 near Giessen - 1808 Paris) and received an early artistic education. Until the French Revolution he created numerous pictures with genre motifs or with political content, also in the environment of the French court. His depictions are characterised by the masterly use of folds in the robe and the depiction of materiality, as well as the expressive shaping of facial expressions and emotions.The present sheet was engraved by the French engraver Louis-Jacques Cathelin, who specialised in portraits, and shows a seated aristocratic lady with a folded, fur-covered coat and an elegant headdress. She has raised her eyes to the sky, apparently in response to a spontaneous emotion, and opened her left hand in a helpless incapacity to act. The reason for this excitement, masterfully rendered here in copper, could be the letter in the lady's right hand, which she has obviously just pulled out of its hiding place in a box. The content is indecipherable but obviously shocking. On an ornate cabinet on the wall behind the lady is a small porcelain figure of an Asian who appears to be mocking the lady with an outstretched finger. The emotional scene is framed in an oval shape by a fictitious frame and surrounded by rose and lily blossoms. A medallion at the foot of the frame shows a miniature scene of a sailboat in distress. This is a very beautiful sheet, which was produced as a proof print even before the writing (avant la lettre).

  • Condition: Very good condition. Pale discolourations are visible especially on the margins. The image has an inconspicuous vertical and a short horizontal crease with rubbing of the print in places. Along the edges the paper is partly clearly rubbed, in places creased and in isolated places torn. Along the right edge of the sheet the edge of the printing plate is torn. The colours are freshly preserved.
