Black and white "S car stop" British Rail sign.  I believe this dates from the 1970s or 80s.  Painted aluminium construction. Size 25cm X 25cm.

Condition is generally good but has signs of wear and tear in line with its age.  There is some loss of paint around the edges and the face of the sign has paint splatter and some minor scratches on it.  (These signs were normally attached to lampposts and tended not to be protected when the lamppost was repainted!). Please see photos.

These signs indicate to train drivers the position on the platform where they should stop the front of their train.  Sometimes, numbers corresponding to the different lengths of train are used but the "S" indicates a common stopping point for all trains, regardless of length.
