Jasper Information:
Jasper is an opaque variety of Quartz with a variety of minerals which have mixed with the Quartz during its formation. The name Jasper means spotted stone and is derived from Anglo-French jaspre.

Apparently Jasper was a favorite gem in ancient times. Jasper is referenced in Assyrian, Greek, Hebrew and Latin literatures. During the medieval times, Jasper was reputed to give the wearer the power to heal insanity and to heal those possessed by devils. During the fourth century, wearing green Jasper was practiced to bring rain as well as to cure snake bites. Jasper amulets have been found engraved with passages from the Book of the Dead by the ancient Egyptians probably to procure safe passage for the deceased while in the realm of the dead. And, according to one source, the word Yasfeh in Exodus 28:20 means Jasper and was the stone on the Ephod representing the tribe of Benjamin.

This mineral can be highly polished and is used for jewelry, seals, snuff boxes and vases. Jasper has a hardness of 6.5 to 7.0 on the Mohs Scale of Mineral Hardness. Picture Jasper is one of the alternate birthstones of January. Jasper is the state rock of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Many color / banded forms of Jasper are known by special names. For example, Jaspilite is a banded iron formation rock usually found with distinctive bands of Jasper. Egyptian Pebble is a brownish-yellow Jasper. Ocean Jasper usually refers to a specific Jasper found only in one place in Madagascar.

Other names for specific Jaspers include: Achatjaspis, Agate Terreuse, Agathe, Basanite , Bayate, Biggs, Blue Mountain, Bruneau, Chert, Chrysojasper, Cornaline, Creolite, Dallasite, Deschutes, Egyptian Jasper, Iaspis, Jasperite, Jaspis, McDermit Jasper, Orbicular Jasper, Opalite Jasper, Owyhee, Pastelite, Poppy, Quetzalitztli, Riband Jasper, Swiss Lapis (dyed to resemble Lapis Lazuli), Vabanite, Vogelaugenjaspis, Wilkite and Willow Creek. Those mentioned above are far from an exhaustive list but is included to let you know some of the many names for Jasper.

All forms of Jasper are avidly sought after. Every fine-jewelry collection should have several representative examples of each color and style of Jasper.

Colors and Sources:
Jasper is usually brown, red or yellow or a mix of these colors and can have speckles, stripes and / or bands of varying color. Picture Jasper or Scenic Jasper has stylized designs from these stripes and bands and are each one-of-a-kind.

Care:
Jasper should be cleaned using lukewarm, mild, soapy water and rinsed with the same temperature water. Avoid sudden changes of temperature and, as with all fine jewelry, remove before doing any type of physical work. Traditional gemstone procedure of storing in soft cloth away from other articles of jewelry hold true, too. Ultrasonic cleaners, steam cleaners and chemicals should never be used.

Important Information:

Carat, Karat or Carrot?
Carat: A carat with an initial C is a unit of weight used for gemstones. One carat is 200 milligrams which equals 0.2 grams in weight. A gram, incidentally, is 1/454 of a pound which would make 28.375 grams to an ounce.

Karat: A karat with an initial K is a reference to the purity of gold. As defined, pure gold is 24 karat. Karat is often abbreviated as k or kt.

Carrot: A carrot with two Rs is a root vegetable that, historically, came in a wide range of colors including black, green, orange, purple, red, white and yellow. Green? And I thought they were just a bit moldy.

Chain Necklaces:
Solid 100% copper, 10kt gold and .925 sterling silver 18-inch chains are available. Please email us for the current eBay lot numbers.

Cleaning Your Jewelry:
Metal-specific dipping solutions are available at most variety and department stores. Since these solutions are made from chemicals, extreme caution should be exercised when using this type of solution. Some stones are highly perishable in these solutions, so follow jeweler recommendations. If in doubt, do NOT dip.

Anti-tarnish strips are available to purchase. These help minimize the natural patina (tarnish) on sterling silver. They should be replaced on a regular basis depending upon the area to be protected and the airflow. Many of our sterling silver pieces are shipped with a small black piece of anti-tarnish material to protect from tarnishing.

The following are general, non-specific guidelines to jewelry cleaning. This is not meant to replace specific cleaning instructions provided by competent sources. When in doubt, ask a professional jeweler before cleaning.

Most gemstones can be sparingly cleaned using lukewarm, mild, soapy water and rinsed with the same temperature water. Avoid exposure to strong light and sudden changes of temperature. As with all fine jewelry, remove before doing any type of physical work. Traditional gemstone procedure of storing in soft cloth away from other articles of jewelry hold true, too. Ultrasonic cleaners, steam cleaners and chemicals should never be used. Hair-spray and perfumes can leave permanent residue on all gemstones so be sure to keep your jewelry far away from these common items.

Color:
Color is subjective and the result of many variables. The color of the gemstones may and will probably vary from what you see on your computer monitor.

Some naturally-occurring gemstones come in a wide range of color shades. The particular gemstone used in an individually-crafted piece will vary from the color displayed on your computer monitor or printed from a printer. Some gemstones, such as Alexandrite, readily change color as the lighting source changes.

If you are curious about what may cause a variance in color from what you see on your monitor, email us. Please include your regular email address with your request.

Nonetheless, measurements usually will vary since most pieces are individually handcrafted from naturally-ocurring gemstones.

Numbers:
For all who have asked, the letter / number combinations at the right end of the item title is our inventory number. Sometimes it indicates the basic gemstone along with the type of jewelry piece.
