A rare opportunity to purchase a superb quality, original engraved portrait of Queen Victoria, which is from the original edition, as owned by Queen Victoria. We recently purchased a private collection, which included the complete set of twenty six "Early Portraits of Queen Victoria 1820 - 1855".

This set was released in 1897 as a subscribed numbered limited edition of only 350, to mark the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria. Many of the portraits were from Queen Victorias Private collection, and had never been produced before or since.

Queen Victoria had the first ten sets,and a further three hundred and fifty sets, on luxury Japanese card, were available by subscription,this is one from that rare set.

At the time the sets were produced they were described as;

"A series of twenty five beautiful portraits of Her Majesty from rare engravings,depicting the Queen in infancy,in childhood,in girlhood,and as wife, mother, and Monarch;from paintings by Chalon, Westall, Landseer and many other famous painters of the period".

This rare set was by subscription only, and in 1897 cost One Pound Five Shillings,this was a fortune at the time, more than a years wages for some.As such they could only be afforded by the wealthy. Amongst the subscribers who purchased a set were;

  • H.R.H.The Duchess of York
  • H.R.H.The Duchess of Teck
  • H.R.H.Prince Christian of Denmark
  • H.R.H.The Grand Duke of Luxemburg
  • Lady Fanny Fitzwygram
  • The Dowager Lady Pelly
  • Rt.Hon.Anna,Countess of Kingston
  • His Grace the Duke of Wellington
  • Major-Gen.Sir William Crossman

This rare portrait was executed in 1837,it is entitled "Her Most Gracious The Queen".This portrait shows Victoria in her Robes of State seated on the Throne,attended by the Duchess of Sutherland,Misstress of the Robes,and the Duchess of Northumberland in Court costume.It is taken taken from the original 1838 painting by J.Stewart. and was engraved by S.W.Reynolds.This portrait was originally published in 1839.

This is the original 1897 portrait on thick Japanese paper,it is not a modern copy. Because the portrait has been kept in the original portfolio since 1897 it is in amazing condition, without any fading,foxing or damage.The overall size of the portrait is 11" x 15" - 280mm x 380mm, this is larger than our A4 scanner area,as such when scanning we have not been able to include the outer area.

Possibly the only opportunity,in recent years, to buy one of these beautiful antique portraits from this exclusive set.
