Ok I am tired of CCNA students buying labs from me and then discovering they cannot connect to any of the machines because they didn't notice that their computer only has USB ports. Students look at your machine and if it only has USB ports buy one of these because you will need it.

This adapter is needed if your machine only has USB ports and you want to connect a Cisco console cable for console access or file transfer.
IT People
My need this adapter for similar terminal emulation or file transfer through an RS232 connection to other machines such as PBX, Key System, Firewall, Session Border Controller and most other IT boxes.

To communicate with or transfer data to GPS receivers, bar code scanners, point of sale devices, LED and LCD text displays, satellite phones, low-speed satellite modems, flat-screen (LCD and Plasma) monitors, test and measuring equipment, digital multimeters, weighing systems, CNC controllers, stenography or stenotype machines, printers, actual computer terminal, uninterruptible power supply, teletype and older digital cameras and PDAs.
It works by adding an external DB9 port through the USB port and then your Cisco console cable (or other device) can plug into the DB9 (see diagram above) port in the adapter. The adapter requires you to load a driver which can sometimes be not fun.
Windows 8 drivers and all others can be downloaded from ftdichip.com (Yes FTDI - Windows lies if it says the chip is Prolific))
