These are the 78xx series of regulators. Available in fixed output voltages of +5V, +12V, and +15V. 
The first two letters are the manufacturers letters, 'L' for STMicroelectronics, 'LM' for FairchildSemiconductor/Texas Instruments.
 
These L78XX regulators are packaged in the TO-220 package and are capable of supplying up to 1.5A of output current (heat sinking may be required).
Each type employs internal current limiting, thermal shut down and safe operating area protection.
