Michael Jackson's Thriller jacket refers to the iconic candy-apple-red jacket with black strips that Michael Jackson dances in with the living dead in his Thriller Music video in 1983. Thriller is the title of his album and the title of the songs on that album featuring one of Michael's most iconic music videos of all time.
In just over a year, Thriller became—and currently remains—the best-selling album of all time, with estimate sales of over 100 million copies worldwide according to various sources. The album won a record-breaking eight Grammy Awards in 1984, including Album of the Year.
Thriller enabled Michael Jackson to break down racial barriers in pop music via his appearances on MTV and meeting with President of the United States Ronald Reagan at the White House. The album was one of the first to use music videos as successful promotional tools—the videos for "Thriller", "Billie Jean", and "Beat It" all received regular rotation on MTV.
On June 27, 2011, the original jacket sold for $1.8 million at Julien's Auctions. The buyer, Milton Verret, described the jacket as "the greatest piece of rock and roll memorabilia in history". This jacket became the "hottest outerwear fad of the mid-1980s" and was widely emulated. It is even emulated by stars today such as Chris Brown and Kanye West. It also became one of the most sought after by many people and the epitome of the 1980s teen cool. The jacket he wore in the "Thriller" video, along with a copy of the black and white leather jacket he wore in one of the Pepsi commercials and in the dance rehearsal portions behinds the scenes of The Making of Michael Jackson's Thriller, are amongst his best-selling jackets.
Michael's original jacket was designed by Deborah Nadoolman Landis, (director John Landis' wife) who had also designed Indiana Jones's jacket in Raiders of the Lost Ark and many others.
