Lingam or Lingham stones are exclusively found in the Holy Narmada River, which runs through the states of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, leading out into the Arabian Sea in west central India. The stones are legally harvested by few who have been granted the privilege to harvest them once a year during the dry season when the waters are low. Current damming projects on the Narmada River create uncertainty of lingams being presented in the future making each year’s harvest just a little more special to those who love and cherish these precious stones.

These sacred stones are comprised of cryptocrystalline quartz which essentially means that the crystals within the stone are unique in that there is no detectable signature crystal structure, but rather is unorganized and frenzied structure instead. The bizarre crystal structures are smaller than what the human eye can detect but are nonetheless present and are detectable through a microscope.

The unique egg shape of the lingam is formed naturally in the river from being churned and tumbled through the waters. Stones are further formed gently and just slightly by hand on the river shore.
