Which size of Braid, do I actually need?

Confused by the different types that have been made over the years? With only a few very rare exceptions, it basically boils down to just three different types. That's not bad over a span of 50 years of Scalextric Cars.

This advert is for the Type 3, braid 40mm long, but we also sell 20mm and 27mm, along with a multitude of other sizes

TYPE 3:    40mm Braids

In the 1980's Scalextric produced some Stock-Cars with a commutator-like device on the pivot post of their slot guide and both ends of the braid tucked in, which allowed them to spin round and run in the reverse direction without reversing polarity to the track. Now, of course, most people asscociate them with the Drift-Cars,which have become very popular in recent times.

TYPE 2:    27mm Braids

This braid, was introduced circa 1990 and continues, in slightly modified form, as the 'Sport' guide familiar to the modern cars.

The motor leads on these remain inside the chassis, attaching to the inboard fittings of a pair of plates which have an exposed face beneath the chassis. The longer braids then bend over the top face of the guide and contact the plates as it pivots.

Here you can see the braids' trapped ends, just visible in their slot, behind the free trailing ones.

(These braids are also suitable for Micro-Scalextric cars)

TYPE 1:    20mm Braids

This braid, together with the old 'standard' slot-guide has been Scalextric's longest production power pick-up system. It was used on most cars from the early 1960's to the very late 80's, some of which, may have carried over into the 1990's.

It is easily idenfied, as the motor leads exit the front end of the chassis, usually just forward of the front axle. A pair of brass eyelets (sometimes referred to as 'collets') on the ends of the leads trap the braids in their slots at the leading edge of the slot-guide.

them with the Drift-Cars, as they have been quite a hit recently. There's quite a catalogue of 360-degree spinners out there now!....................................................................................................................................................................
