James Williams, born a slave of a slave mother and a free father, was thought to have been born around 1790. Gaining his freedom he had an adventous life at sea until he settled as janitor at Trinity College in Hartford. It happens that he was nominated as Vice President of the United States by Daniel Pratt in 1867.
