Description Before the internet, people learned song lyrics from magazines! This is a wonderful magazine that features music from the radio, from Movies and from theatre - April 1940. Magazine has song lyrics, terrific ads, all kinds of photos of stars and musicians. Ann Sheridan is featured on the cover. The magazine readership was primarily young women between the ages of 15 and 25.
In the 1940's, especially just before and during WWII, young Americans were obsessed with music. Just like today, they learned all the words to the songs, and like today, there were lots! Unlike today, there was no internet, so information about the music, musicians and lyrics were put into magazines! There were a number of different magazines that featured this type of material.
This one is "Song Hits" and is the April 1940 issue. and is titled a "lyric magazine" and has lyrics from the musical "Rythm on the River" starring Bing Crosby and Mary Martin. There were contests, music quizes, and record reviews. There were really wonderful ads, mostly for cosmetics and things that appealed to young women. There was a feature of the music from the 1940's Worlds Fair.
Of course, the lyrics, compared to today, are a bit non-sensical and definitely not political - for example,
"on a two week vacation with pay, he's a tough hombre in a gay sombrero
and he rides the plains of Mexico
Giddy ap Giddy ap Giddy ap Yoo Hoo"
Swing was (pun intended ) in full swing. Sometimes it was more about the sounds and syncopation the words made, not the actual words, as they were added to the music.
The magazine has the story lines of many of the popular musicals of the day, as well as songs heard on the radio. There were lots of pictures of the stars, and lots of factoids, as well as they occasional article about the stars. The magazine cover is charming, and worthy of framing! I have lots of other issues, so take a look!
The magazine is slightly fragile, with browned paper. It has a staple binding and the cover is slightly rubbed scraped and very slightly worn. It is slightly wrinkled from handling. It displays well, and the flaws, for it's age and the quality of the paper, quite remarkable!
