CALMUC TARTARS

(Russia - Kalmyk peoples - native costume)

Issued London, in the late 18th century (ca.1780's)).

Engraved by Grignion.

A very appealing 18th century engraved print.

This type of old / vintage engraved printing process was very difficult and laborious, involving long-apprenticed, highly trained skillful pictorial artisans. It also involved challenging hand-operated machinery, tricky manual tasks such as proper inking of plates, sheets of hand-made paper individually hung to dry, skill in all aspects of production, patience, and other endless tasks and labors. Because of these and various other historical factors, this printed leaf is an interesting original artifact from long past moment in printing upon paper.

Please view scan closely. There is an enlargeable zoom feature that allows for a close inspection. This is central to the listing. It takes precedence over any words we use. Look at the scan. Study it. Then decide.*

Sheet is lightly to moderately age-toned, perhaps some old dampstaining or small spotting as seen in scan, light age dustiness or minor toning; still mostly clean and fresh -- visually appealing image.

Could readily be displayed or collected.

In all, remains a charming old, vintage, antique printed image any collector, dealer or institution would be pleased to own.

Sheet measures c. 9 3/8" W x  6 5/8" H.

Engraved area measures c. 6 7/8" W x  4 5/8" H.
