Container Corporation of America

Great Ideas of Western Man

An unbelievable Who’s Who of mid-century modern art and design!

From 1950 to 1975, Container Corp. of America ran an ad campaign entitled "Great Ideas of Western Man," in publications such as “Time” and “Fortune” magazines.  To call it an ad campaign is an understatement – it was a large scale corporate art program that never once showed the product it was sponsored by. Walter Paepcke, president of Container Corporation of America, and his wife Elizabeth (a designer and decorator) helped showcase the talents of the very best modern artists and designers by using their works in Container Corporation of America advertisements, a feat that has not been equaled.

Art Director for CCA and legendary Bauhaus master Herbert Bayer commissioned prominent artists, illustrators and designers to illustrate selected quotes drawn from a broad spectrum of western thought. The quotes included philosophers, writers, scientists, and politicians, cultural and religious figures from Aesop to Einstein.

A few of the luminaries that contributed their unique artistic vision to this groundbreaking campaign:

Alvin Lustig, Paul Rand, Saul Bass, Herbert Bayer, Herbert Matter, Milton Glaser, Ben Shahn, Max Bill, Richard Lindner, etc.
