DESCRIPTION

This is a firm buff usually used with Emery and Tripoli cutting compounds. It is also used as abrasive polishing wheels with Greaseless Abrasive and Set-Up Wheels. Made from 100% cotton muslin, 3/8" spiral sewn, 40 ply, 1/2" thick.

Spiral sewn buffs have a consistent hardness during use unlike concentric sewn buffs. A concentric sewn buff will become harder as it wears down closer to the next stitch and is very hard just before the stitch is worn through. Also, while wearing through the stitch on a concentric sewn buff, it is a little aggravating when the stitch whips around until it completely wears out.

These buffs are approximately 1/2" thick and can be stacked up to achieve a wider buff. For example, 2 of these buffs stacked together, or ganged, will make a 1" wide buff. 2 or 3 buffs stacked together have an advantage over a single wide buff because they can be switched around and will not wear a dish into the face of the buff. Once a dish is worn into the face of the single wide buff it has to be raked flat again. A dished buff can catch part easier than a proper flat face buff.

When choosing the width of the buff, bear in mind the wider buff has more contact area and requires more horse power than a narrower buff. A good 3/4 HP buffer can usually power a 1" wide face buff without bogging down.

The Spiral sewn buff is usually used with a Gray Emery Cutting Compound in a 2 step process when polishing stainless steel and steel. That combination will cut out light scratches and 600 grit sand paper lines. This is known as the cutting step and will leave a semi bright surface that is shinny but needs a finishing step to bring out the brilliant shine. Once the imperfections are removed, a Canton Flannel Buff used with White Rouge as the second step will bring out the final shine. When the Canton Flannel is used with the White Rouge it is known as a coloring operation. If a 3 step operation is used, a Sisal Buff & Black Emery will be used first, followed by the Spiral Sewn & Gray Emery and finally the Canton Flannel & White Rouge. For aluminum, brass, copper and zinc the Spiral Sewn is used with the Tripoli Cutting Compound followed by the Canton Flannel & White Rouge.

Safety First - Always wear adequate & proper EYE, EAR, FACE, BODY and RESPIRATORY PROTECTION while polishing and buffing.
