Description
This chair has no upholstery - the seat and back are made from wrapping cord! It can be brightly colored, and the chair painted, nor left natural. It is a really fun vintage chair that was cutting edge modern in 1951! It is a fun project that would go well anywhere! The cord is actually quite comfortable! The pattern is excellent - uncut and unused - complete with instructions in a worn envelope.
These types of woodworking patterns are called DIY (Do It Yourself). This one is from the Easi-Bild Pattern Company, Pleasantville, NY. The popularity of DIY “do-it –yourself” home improvement and decorating projects began in the early to mid 20th century, and especially after WWII (returning soldiers went at home buying due to the GI bill with a vengeance). The housing boom and consumer demand for new home furnishings and interior decoration along with unprecedented amounts of leisure time sparked an interest in creating your own home woodworking shops. Homeowners became interested in making their own furniture, storage units, and other interior and exterior furnishings in modern styles." (from DIY at CHM). Easi-Bild really nailed (pun intended) the market, with their projects that could be completed by unskilled woodworkers - which the majority of the returning soldiers were! The garage workshops were the forerunners of the man cave. Many of the men married quickly, and then realized that the garage was the only place they could escape and do man stuff (drink beer by themselves while listening to ball games on the radio) without interruptions!
