Rare original engraving after Hendrik Goltzius - Muse Clio - part of the series of nine muses - created in 1592 - this print is an antique copy after the original by Claes Janszoon Visscher (1587-1652) - like many of the other copies created of these works, this is a mirror image and slightly weaker version of the original by an early 17th Century artist - each muse carries verse by Franco Estius in the bottom margin - Dutch 17th Century

Good condition, medium intensity print, trimmed margins, some marks and foxing, no watermark evident - evidence of previous mounting to the top and corners - Please note this is an original print not a reproduction - Please refer to the photos as they form an integral part of the description - Please note the stand is not included - This item is not mounted and not framed and will be packed between two pieces of heavy gauge card.

Hendrik Goltzius 1558 - 1617 Dutch draftsman, printmaker, publisher and painter - he was the leading Dutch engraver of the early Baroque period - examples of his drawings, paintings and prints are held in major museums and leading art institutions around the world. Prints of the muses are held by the Met Museum, Rijks Museum, Victorian Albert Museum, Havard Art Museum, Museum of Fine Arts Boston and the British Museum, amongst others.
