RW25 1958 Federal Duck Stamp Print
Personalized to Kay and Clark Gable , from the Clark Gable Estate
Clark Gable, aside from Maryln Monroe is one of the most recognized and famous American film Actors best known for his role in the epic film Gone with the Wind.
Dubbed “the King of Hollywood” Clark Gable epitomized Hollywoods Golden Age, and was a legend for his on – off screen romances. He hit box-office gold with such films as It Happened One Night and Gone with the Wind. His final film, The Misfits, which was also Marlyn Monroes last film.
Gable was a ladies’ man both on and off screen, and he was married five times over the course of his life. His wives included his first theater director Josephine Dillon, socialite Rhea Langham, actress Carole Lombard, Lady Sylvia Ashley and actress Kay Williams .
Clark Gable was an avid hunter and loved skeet shooting spending a lot of his leisure time at the world famous Santa Monica Gun Club in California. He was also an avid duck hunter spending time with his hunting buddies , Jack Conway, motion picture director, Spence Olin, famous trapshooter, and Jimmy Robinson, world famous Sportswriter of the 40’s and 50’s. Clark’s 3rd wife Carole Lombard
was also a avid duck hunter and the both of them went on several outings together.
One of the Hunting Camps was on lake Manitoba which he would meet up with “the guys” for a week of duck hunting in between working on films. Jimmy Robinson dedicated an entire chapter to Clark Gable in his book “ Forty Years of Hunting” by Jimmy Robinson.
The year was 1958 and Les Kouba won the 25th Federal Duck Stamp Contest. Les Kouba was also a member of the Santa Monica Gun Club in California and knew Jimmy Robinson. Jimmy Robinson requested of Les Kouba one of his 1st Edition Prints to give to his friend Clark Gable and his wife Kay at a dinner party at the Santa Monica Gun Club. Jimmy Robinson signed the print and he and his wife had it dedicated “To our Good Friends Kay and Clark Gable” . He also gave Clark a personal signed copy of his book, Forty Years of Hunting. Clark Gable died just a little over a year later.
This framed print hanged on Clark Gables family room at his summer home in Temecula, California for over 50 years before it was sold along with all other artifacts from the home at Christies famous “Clark Gable Estate Sale” in June 22, 2006.
I was fortunate to aquire this rare duck print along with the book given to Clark and his wife.
The print and frame were in horrible condition left unkept for over 50 years. The frame was not worth salvaging, so I removed the print . I did save all the stickers from the Christies auction and framer . the print itself was very badly oxidized along with being glued down. I sent the print to one of the finest Conservators in the US and they managed to bring it back to brand new condition.
I did not try to restore the book, the book is in fine condition, no smells, no loose binding just some water staining on the outer cover around the binding
Clearly if not one of the most attractive of all the Federal Prints owned by a celebrity. A truly desirable piece for the advanced Print Collector.
Beautifully and tastefully reframed and matted with conservation glass. Comes with the book as well. Note in the same Christies auction there was also a print given to Clark Gable by Walt Disney an animation cell that brought over $16,700 not including the hammer fees. (see sale 1681 June 22 2006)
