DESCRIPTIONS:
CAMERA Zeiss Contax IIa 35mm Rangefinder camera, s/n "X 1213" from late 1952, matching s/n's on the finder shoe and inside. The Black
Dial version of shutter setting, 1/1 to 1/1250. Made in Stuttgart, Germany. Zeiss divisions in 1952 were also known as Zeiss-Opton and
Zeiss-Ikon; the company has an interesting history.
This camera is one of the "Greats," German engineering from top to bottom, built by Zeiss-Ikon to "out Leica the Leica."
CAMERA CASE, CAP AND SPOOL The manufacturer's original leather case is provided. Labeled front and rear. Chrome trim. With long
strap. And a matte finish aluminum camera body cap, with manufacturer's mark. The rewind spool is original, intact, marked "Contax Made in
Germany."
BOOKLET "Contax IIa Instruction Book - Zeiss Ikon AG. Stuttgart" of 36 pages, English, printed in Germany in '0752.'
PRIME LENS "Sonnar" 50mm f/1.5 fast prime lens, s/n 819502, front labeled "Zeiss-Opton Nr 819502 Sonnar 1:1,5 f=50mm" in
white, and "T" in red. The focus scale is in feet, on the camera part of the mount, 3-100 (inf). Aperture range is f/1,5 to f/16. Vintage
note-Commas also used for f-stops 2,8 and 5,6. Described as having "Unrivaled sharpness and brilliance even with full aperture"
by Manufacturer.
PRIME LENS ADD-ONS There is a clamp-on metal hood with a filter provision, in brushed aluminum and chrome plate finish. No
manufacturer's mark. There is a 41mm ND filter installed. There is another clamp-on hood that also fits the prime lens, in silver crinkle coat; no
manufacturer's mark. There's a leather case from Kenko for one of the hoods. There is a rubber front lens cap, "Lens Guard." No case for the
prime lens.
TELEPHOTO LENS "Nikkor-Q.C" 135mm f/3.5 fixed telephoto lens, s/n 261428, front labeled "Nikkor-Q.C 1:3.5 f=13.5 cm Nippon
Kogaku Japan No. 261428" in white, except the "C" is red, for Coated. Also marked with " 'C' " on the lens barrel, for Contax
mount. This lens weighs almost two pounds, and has its own tripod screw hole. Nippon Kogaku is better known today as Nikon.
TELEPHOTO FINDER By design, the telephoto lens mounts to the Contax camera body differently than the prime lens, but works correctly with
the Rangefinder. An included Auxiliary Finder fits the shoe on the camera top, correcting the view for the long lens. With its own small little
leather case, supplied by Nippon Kogaku.
TELEPHOTO HOOD Telephoto lens comes with an alloy screw-on hood, from the manufacturer, with a filter provision. An unthreaded ND
51mm filter is installed. The hood detaches and reverses onto the lens to serve as a cap when stored. The mount end has a metal cap as well.
TELEPHOTO LENS CASE The manufacturer's leather case is provided. Lacks its strap.
LIGHT METER The Contax IIa has no built-in light meter, in contrast to the Zeiss family sibling IIIa. A user needs a handheld light meter, must
compute shutter and aperture settings, and then adjust on the camera, before shooting. Provided.
A Weston Master V light meter was used with this camera and is included. It seems to be working still (it requires no battery) but the accuracy is
not known. Model 748; s/n TL928. With its instruction booklet. And a diffusion filter. And a handsome functional grey leather case, from
Weston.
PHOTOGRAPHER'S BAG A vinyl camera bag holds the camera, the extra lens, the light meter, extra film and accessories. The interior has an
adjustable partition. It has a front compartment for miscellaneous small parts. No manufacturer's mark; condition says it might be newer than
the camera. Not pictured.
CONDITION:
CAMERA Overall, Very Good, Used. All metal surfaces very nice; some tiny usage marks to matte finish, no scratches or dents. The bright
metal elements are Like New throughout. Leather is sound with no scuffs; the rear Zeiss Ikon imprint is perfect. Self-timer is Good. Film
transport and interior are Good.
CAMERA CONDITION NOTE - Shutter elements look good, but lowest settings stay open too long; snappy at 1/25 and faster; not timed.
Camera was recently acquired from an Estate Sale and has not been used to take pictures since acquisition.
CAMERA CASE Leather is very good, with sound stitching, sound hinges. There is a one inch scratch on the upper rear and minor indications
of us. The chrome trim is very good. Paint is worn from the rear lower rivet head.
PRIME LENS Good, Used. Exterior, very good; barrel is near perfect. Glass has internal dust, consistent with age, I saw no fungus
but maybe there is 2mm surface scratch. Note - I am not a professional, sold As Is. Coatings look very good. Aperture leaves
move smoothly and easily, and are oil free.
TELEPHOTO LENS Good, Used. No scratches or fungus seen, but slight internal dusting observed. Aperture leaves move
smoothly and positively, both opening and closing, but are well coated with oil. I don't know if this is a problem in this manual
lens. Barrel is perfect. Case is OK, Used: sound but scuffed. No strap. Finder and Case are Very Good.
LIGHT METER Good, Used. Responds to changing light input as expected, but not measured for accuracy. Case is Good, Used with
numerous impressions in the leather, but none of the color is scuffed off. The lace strap is OK, Used.
PHOTOGRAPHER'S BAG Very Good, Used. The vinyl has no scuffs, scratches, chips, marks. Best vinyl I've seen. The hinge has been
repaired, but this is not apparent from the outside. The inside is clean and not stained.
OVERALL, This Contax IIa is very nice for a collection. Probably it's usable for taking pictures with lenses as they are. Exposure selection in
use will require a little practice. Just like old times. Have fun!
