Striking miniature portrait by Mathieu Deroche, c. 1883.

Deroche, a french photographer and painter, was one of the few talented innovators of the day to successfully devise a method of transferring photographs onto enamel (over copper, usually) and then hand-coloring the image before applying a protective glaze and kiln-firing. The result was a delicate and vivid new artform that caught the world's attention and landed Deroche a gold medal at the Paris World's Fair (Exposition Universelle) in 1878.

Deroche's work has been appreciated and featured in recent years by such prestigious auction houses as Christie's, Sotheby's, Drouot, Tajan... an important addition to one's collection of antique miniatures, indeed.

We see here a dashing gentleman of the era; as previously described, a painted photograph on an enamelled copper plaque and set in a simple brass frame.
The back of the plaque is marked "Medaille d'Or 1878 Miniature Mathieu Deroche 39 bd des Capucines Paris 1883." We also find a reference number for the sitter and possible initials at the very bottom of the plaque, partially covered by the frame.

Condition is very good to excellent with the slightest of wear along the bottom edge of the plaque (hidden by the frame).

Measures 5.4 x 4.3 cms with the frame.
