REVIEW:  1000 Glass Beads with introduction by Cathy Finegan has 400 pages of awe inspiring photos of glass beads. Lampwork is an art form that will always be near and dear to my heart. Soft Flex Company got their start through the support of local bead stores and lampworkers. Mike started off making glass beads as well as recreating estate sale treasures. He took his first class from Loren Stump in the early 90's. This book has some stunning beads...beads that you could not even imagine in your wildest dreams.

From the back cover: "Examine magnificent glass bead works of art including jewelry and sculptural pieces from the top names in the field today, as well as exciting works from emerging artists. Their exquisite designs reflect the diversity and innovation of beadmaking techniques from around the world. Simultaneously fine art and functional, wearable and collectible, these glass treasures will astound you with their originality and artistry."

From the forward: "Beads have been with us for a very long time; the earliest ones, dating back some 40,000 years ago, were made of animal bones and teeth. But glass beads-born of flame and fancy-began to appear around 4,000 years ago. No too long afterward, glass beads were considered as valuable as precious stone, worn primarily by nobility. Later, they were used as currency."

Inside you'll find: Excellent forward by Cathy Finegan; 1000 glass beads/artists featured; Stellar photography. [softflexcompany.com].

REVIEW:  "1000 Glass Beads: Innovation & Imagination In Contemporary Glass Beadmaking" provides an introduction by Cathy Finegan and over 400 pages of detail on glass bead works of art, from jewelry to sculptures and functional projects. Packed with good-sized color photos on every page, "1000 Glass Beads" outlines contemporary bead artists' works, includes a quote of their objectives, adds materials lists, and offers much inspiration. [Midwest Book Review].

REVIEW:  A virtual museum of lampwork beads. This book is beautifully orchestrated. It is a treasury of beads created by some of the finest lampwork artists from around the globe. My only regret is that I failed to contribute my work when asked by the publisher. It would have been an honor to be included with such masters in this art form! Hopefully next time! If you don't have this book, please make every effort to add it to your collection.

REVIEW:  First, I probably need to say I'm a bit biased, as a bracelet and beads of mine are in this book. Regardless, if you are a bead lover, you can get so captivated by the beads in this book that hours go by unnoticed. As a beadmaker and a jewelry maker, I was mesmerized trying to figure out all the different techniques and thinking of ways I could use all these gorgeous beads.

The variety of styles, colors and techniques is very broad. Even in the few years since this has been published, though, hundreds of new tools and types of glass are now available that were not when images were submitted for this book - makes me think it's time for "Volume II"! Even so, there is more than enough in this book to put any bead lover in a trance.

As others have mentioned, this book is NOT a how-to or project book in any way, shape or form. It's a beautifully produced, colorful catalog of work by many bead artists. There is even a list by name and location in the back in case you want to find a particular artist (I know - I was contacted by another local glass artist). Lark Books' whole series of "500..." (or in this case "1000...") books are all gorgeous and fuel for your creativity!

REVIEW:  This is the latest book in Lark's revisited 500 Series - renamed the Showcase 500 and soft bound (which I believe will stand the test of time much better than the hard bound covers). I know I sound like a broken record but I truly believe that the 500 Series and the new Showcase 500 will be the most valuable tool in the Appraisers' bookshelf - these tomes hold the work of hundreds of Art Jewelers whose names the future may not recall - but whose work and passion are evident in these pages.

This volume is an excellent example of the vast array of styles and techniques that make up the "Art Jewelry" movement. The publisher of course will claim that this collection is representative of the contemporary jewelry scene but take it from someone that is literally buried in both the fine jewelry and art jewelry worlds - this really is representative of today's Art Jewelers! I would order my copy today!!!

REVIEW:  You all probably know how I feel about these Showcase series books by Lark Books by now...I drool over them for days.  They sit endlessly on my coffee table, at least until the next one comes along.  And sometimes, when they include my own work, they sit there even longer!  Well, this time, my work was not included, but I am nonetheless thrilled with the selection that was chosen for 1000 Glass Beads.

REVIEW: Lark Books has done it again with the most exciting display of beads created by artists from around the world. If you are a bead maker, bead collector, or a beader you will want this book! [Beadwright].

REVIEW:  The book is really stunning. The compact size packs quite a punch of art. This book is laid out very much like a gallery exhibit: each spread reminds me of a wall space where similar works of art are hung together, and sometimes the connections are surprising. [Erin Prais-Hintz, Professional Jewelry Designer].

REVIEW:  These tomes hold the work of hundreds of art jewelers whose names the future may not recall, but whose work and passion are evident in these pages. This volume is an excellent example of the vast array of styles and techniques that make up the Art Jewelry movement. [Robyn Hawk, Metalsmith].

REVIEW:  A wonderland of possibilities...page after page of inspiration. [American Craft Magazine].

REVIEW:  The ultimate tour through lampwork heaven…This is a must-have book for anyone who loves art, beads, lampworking, or simply marvels at creative genius. [Lapidary Journal].

REVIEW:  The photography is excellent and there are plenty of awe-inspiring close-ups. [Bead & Button].

REVIEW:  A wealth of visual imagery…beautiful reproductions. [Art Times].

REVIEW:  Last night I was looking through “1000 Glass Beads – Innovation and Imagination in Contemporary Glass Beadmaking” by Lark Books (2204) and I remembered all over again why I fell in love with the book and just HAD TO HAVE IT. 1000 Glass Beads is a visual delight that inspires, captivates, intrigues and delights the visual soul. To think that these beautiful creations are small and contain so much detail.

I was captivated at age 19 with Czech lampwork glass beads and have remained so -  my business is based around them and I love it. I find the current tread for artisan contemporary lampwork beads just a intriguing. This wonderful book covers artistians like Jane Praxel, the humourous Sara Sally LaGrand, Amy Trescott, Emiko Sawamoto, Carolyn Noga, Constance Paulding, Nancy Pilgrim, Karen Wolffis, Inara Knight, Karen Moyer, Priscilla Turner Spada, Shirley Cook, Lisa St. Martin and Brian Kerkvliet to mention only a few very talented people being showcased. [CreativelyBelle.Com].

REVIEW:  This is not a how-to book. It is a valuable resource that provides hours of inspirational reading. A must for any beginning to serious beadmaker. The artists and beads showcased in this book are the very best in contemporary glass beadmaking. 1000 dazzling and unique examples by an international array of Lampworkers. This color survey has it all: the beads come single or multiples, jewelry or sculptural pieces, flameworked and kiln formed; and their diversity and beauty are amazing. [Sundance Art Glass].

REVIEW:  These photo gallery books are part of a continuing series on contemporary crafts. All feature artistic, sometimes humorous, and generally nonfunctional examples of brooches and other jewelry forms by many international artists. Captions include the artist's name, title, dimensions, medium, and photographer's credit. As compilations of the best work being done today, these visual delights are an inspiration for crafters; they do not include projects, nor do the previous series volumes. Recommended for specialized decorative arts collections. [Library Journal]].

  READER REVIEWS

REVIEW:  A feast for the eyes, this book is filled with page after page of stunning beads, like a bound museum displaying the best of the best bead art. Whether I'm getting ready to make some beads or paint or even write a story, this book is a great place to find creative inspiration. A definite keeper that gets referenced often just for the joy of spectacular colors and composition.

REVIEW:  An inspiration! This book is superb! The photography is excellent and had I known this book was this good I would have bought it ages ago! It’s a very thick book with as the title says 1000 beads, there is very little text in the book, but you really don't need it, the pictures speak for themselves. This has got to be the best book on glass beads I have ever seen.

REVIEW:  Wow, what an amazing book! Whether you love glass beads and lampwork or you just love beautiful art, I believe you will be thrilled with this book. This book is definitely not a 'how to' book for those who want to make beads, but it is sure to inspire you beyond your imagination. There are over 400 pages in this book with very little text, however each page contains one or two, large, full color, highly detailed photos with a caption giving you the name of the artist and a very brief description of their technique. There are hundreds of different artists featured in the book with just as many different styles...and these are not merely 'glass beads', these are absolute works of art which left me in awe every time I turned the page. (By the way, the price of the book definitely belies the quality, I honestly was not expecting such a high caliber book for this price.)

REVIEW:  This book is just wonderful! I can't tell you just how many beautiful and creative works of art are in here! It makes me want to take a glass class because it's just so fascinating how they make these things! Such detail and in SUCH a small medium! Such respect and awe captures me!

I love the flower and froggie beads the best, but I also have a fondness for the beads that look more ethnic and, dare I say, almost like bones or wood! You HAVE to gander at the berry collection! They LOOK like the real thing! Hoozah to the bead world!

REVIEW:  Feast your eyes on these beads! I am a beader, i.e. I make things with beads. This book celebrates the work of beadsmiths, the people who actually make the beads from scratch. It's not a technical book, so you won't be able to learn from here how it's done, but there are lots and lots of photographs showing glass beads in all their glory. A wonderful present for anyone who appreciates beautiful objects.

REVIEW:  This is another gorgeous '500' title from Lark Books. More eye candy and inspiration for all kinds of creative people.

REVIEW:  I bought this book because I thought it would be good for dipping into for inspiration to get going! It is. There are stacks of brilliant pictures. Quite often I have a pretty good idea of how things are made, but not always. Some are wow, some are delicate, original, witty, incredible - all depending on the eyes that view them. All in all, a good buy; although I freely admit that some pieces make me feel totally inadequate - but there you are - something to strive for. Inspiration or coffee table? Good for both. In any case a good buy.

REVIEW:  Creative and inspiring! As in the other 500 series, the photography is flawless. When my creative muse is on vacation, I only have to pick up this book to just about any page and it sparks a wave of ideas to take into the studio.

REVIEW:  When I first received my copy I couldn't put it down or leave home without it for weeks! It still seems that every time I open it up I find something new that I hadn't seen before!

REVIEW:  Being a jewelry student I find books like 1000 Glass Beads useful tools used to broaden my horizons on the designing and making of jewelry. There are many excellent examples in this book, great photographs too. I rate this book highly and recommend it to anyone who is interested in art and design. I find it a useful reference point where I can find designs and makers that interest me and see how materials can achieve unexpected effects.

REVIEW:  If you're looking for a how-to manual, keep looking. But if you're looking for a book with beautiful photographs of glass beads, you're in the right place. Each page contains photographs of beads by talented glass artisans. What's especially nice about this book is that there are artists represented from many different skill levels. For an intermediate glass artist like me, it's good to see that I've come a long way, but there is still so much territory to explore. The photographs in this book catalog this evolution exquisitely. It's inspirational and almost overwhelming to see so many gorgeous beads together. It will provide me with inspiration for a long time.

REVIEW:  This book is kind of part of a series ("500") by Lark. These books have served me and many people I know as a source of Inspiration. They show one of a kind, hand made pieces by artists from all over the world. Some of the pieces also have descriptions from the artist about what inspired the piece or the ideas behind it. In a classroom, students could look at these books for ideas and see where other artists take their ideas from.

REVIEW:  The photography, the curating/jurying, the layouts, all are beautiful. All materials are identified for each piece. There are some gorgeous works of art in this book. A keeper for the art library. Highly recommend. There are lots of pictures from this book that are becoming very popular on Pinterest.

REVIEW:  This is essentially a picture book of beads. If you're looking for a book to show you how to make beads, then this is not it. There is no instruction provided. If you make lampworked beads and you're looking for inspiration, then this is a must have. The photography is well done and in full color. The beads are just breathtaking and awe inspiring.

REVIEW:  This is one of the best of the Lark publishing series of 500 glass objects and 500 brooches. The photos are first rate and the selection is overwhelming. I put tags to mark my favorites and to show my students when I teach glass fusing. Even though the book is about lampworking, glass fusers can learn from the great combinations of color, unique design ideas and really high quality beads.

REVIEW:  When I first bought it (2006) i had too little experience to appreciate the talent in it. I bought it again 2008 because now I finally do. It covers the work of earlier lampwork artist (pre-2006) all of whom by sharing their knowledge really lay the groundwork for the spectacular beads being created contemporarily.

REVIEW:  Beautifully presented art beads. If you are interested in seeing the work of glass artists, this book is a good purchase. There are no instructions for making any of the beads, but it doesn’t claim that it will give instructions. The art and photography are beautiful.

REVIEW:  Stunning! Wow, the beads in this book are absolutely gorgeous. Some are all right but some will make your mouth drop. I wish they had more detail as to how the beads were created but as far as a book to look at for ideas and to marvel at the amazing work then this book is it! Stunning pictures and amazing works. Would make a great coffee table book for an art lover.

REVIEW:  Lovely, inspirational book. Some of the beads in this book are absolutely unbelievably beautiful. So far, I haven't gotten tired of looking at them every so often. I will see details I missed the first or second time I looked at it.

REVIEW:  The pictures are both wonderful and playful. If you have a curiosity about the way designers think and their designing methods, pick up a copy of this book!

REVIEW:  This is one of the “500” series that I consider a 'dream' book. Shares lots of ideas and 'let's try this one'. The entire series are very worthwhile, some more than others. It's nice to see how many talented people there are.

REVIEW:  Drool... More inspiration than one person can probably implement. There is plenty for the money.

REVIEW:  Beautiful pictures, amazing designs. The book is a great reference for jewelry artists wanting to get inspiration for their work. Great book!

REVIEW:  My husband has several of the 500 series books. He is a jeweler and teaches jewelry classes; he uses books to let his advance-level students find projects that they would like to attempt. Wonderful!

REVIEW:  Many if not most are really art pieces. Photography excellent. Left me wanting more than 1000!

REVIEW:  This a series of books each featuring 500-1000 pieces in each book. I think I own most by now and they are ALWAYS out at this time of year as holiday gifts are made. This is a beauty as well.

REVIEW:  This entire series (500 Necklaces, earrings, etc.) is amazing in the breadth of materials used and design styles displayed. If you can't find inspiration here, you're doomed.

REVIEW:  I bought this as a gift for my jewelry making mother, as inspiration. She was very happy with it. Although she mostly works with beads, she liked seeing more complex pieces.

REVIEW:  The 500 series of books inspire even the very beginner jewelry maker. They pique your interest to learn advanced techniques to some day be able to make something as beautiful as anything in these books. Wonderful inspiration and excellent photography on beautiful quality paper.

REVIEW:  Lark has a series of books presenting well photographed, contemporary fine crafts. This book is a good survey of what is being created in glass beads. If you are teaching in art history or fine crafts areas, this is an important resource for students, collectors, museums, and libraries.

REVIEW:  This book is a joy to gaze at. It is beautiful and elegant. The color photography is outstanding. Don't buy this book if you are looking for flamework instructions. But the images will stir your creative juices. I bought this book twice, one for my glass teacher and one for me!

REVIEW:  Precious objects of desire! When this book was published, it was the first chance many people had to see such a wide selection of beads and beadmakers. It is definitely of its time as some of the featured artists no longer make beads and many of the others have gone on to increase their skill levels beyond what appears in this book.

REVIEW:  1000 Glass Beads is less a book to read then peruse. One of many of Larks' recent compilations on a particular topic, this one focuses on Glass Beads. The majority of beads appear to be flame worked but there were also some kiln formed examples.

REVIEW:  Very creative and inspirational! The pieces are selected by great care. They develop your imagination. Whether you are a beginner or an advice beader, you should have this book.

REVIEW:  Lots of Eye Candy! This little book shows a great variety of glass beads. I am amazed what some people can do with soft glass. The book is filled with wonderful color photos of completed jewelry. For the price it is a great value.

REVIEW:  Amazing, inspiring examples. As a beginner in making glass beads, I am inspired by the variety and complexity of the beads shown in beautiful photos in this book. I hope I can just begin to create some beads one tenth as beautiful as some of these.

REVIEW:  Gorgeous, Gorgeous Book!! This book is pure eye candy!! For those who just appreciate beautiful works of art, or those who are involved or learning lampworking, this book is amazing. No instructions, just pictures of finished glass beads, but that is more than enough.

REVIEW:  Beady eye candy, love it! I often just dip into this book for a drool over the gorgeous work shown. Art glass bead heaven. If you make beads or jewellery, you cannot fail to be inspired.

REVIEW:  Fabulous book for lampworkers and fans alike. As a glassworker myself, I use it at a reference book and to gain inspiration for my own work. While away several hours looking at wonderful beads and wishing they were all your own.

I always ship books Media Mail in a padded mailer.  This book is shipped FOR FREE via USPS INSURED media mail (“book rate”).  All domestic shipments and most international shipments will include free USPS Delivery Confirmation (you might be able to update the status of your shipment on-line at the USPS Web Site) and free insurance coverage.  A small percentage of international shipments may require an additional fee for tracking and/or delivery confirmation.  If you are concerned about a little wear and tear to the book in transit, I would suggest a boxed shipment - it is an extra $1.00.  Whether via padded mailer or box, we will give discounts for multiple purchases. International orders are welcome, but shipping costs are substantially higher.

Most international orders cost an additional $9.99 to $37.99 for an insuredshipment in a heavily padded mailer, and typically includes some form of rudimentary tracking and/or delivery confirmation (though for some countries, this is only available at additional cost). There is also a discount program which can cut postage costs by 50% to 75% if you’re buying about half-a-dozen books or more (5 kilos+).  Rates and available services vary a bit from country to country.  You can email or message me for a shipping cost quote, but I assure you they are as reasonable as USPS rates allow, and if it turns out the rate is too high for your pocketbook, we will cancel the sale at your request.  ADDITIONAL PURCHASES do receive a VERY LARGE discount, typically about $5 per book (for each additional book after the first) so as to reward you for the economies of combined shipping/insurance costs.  Your purchase will ordinarily be shipped within 48 hours of payment.  We package as well as anyone in the business, with lots of protective padding and containers.

All of our shipments are sent via insured mail so as to comply with PayPal requirements.  We do NOT recommend uninsured shipments, and expressly disclaim any responsibility for the loss of an uninsured shipment.  Unfortunately the contents of parcels are easily “lost” or misdelivered by postal employees – even in the USA.  That’s why all of our domestic shipments (and most international) shipments include a USPS delivery confirmation tag; or are trackable or traceable, and all shipments (international and domestic) are insured.  We do offer U.S. Postal Service Priority Mail, Registered Mail, and Express Mail for both international and domestic shipments, as well United Parcel Service (UPS) and Federal Express (Fed-Ex).  Please ask for a rate quotation.  We will accept whatever payment method you are most comfortable with.  If upon receipt of the item you are disappointed for any reason whatever, I offer a no questions asked return policy.  Send it back, I will give you a complete refund of the purchase price (less our original shipping costs).

Most of the items I offer come from the collection of a family friend who was active in the field of Archaeology for over forty years.  However many of the items also come from purchases I make in Eastern Europe, India, and from the Levant (Eastern Mediterranean/Near East) from various institutions and dealers.  Though I have always had an interest in archaeology, my own academic background was in sociology and cultural anthropology.  After my retirement however, I found myself drawn to archaeology as well.  Aside from my own personal collection, I have made extensive and frequent additions of my own via purchases on Ebay (of course), as well as many purchases from both dealers and institutions throughout the world - but especially in the Near East and in Eastern Europe.  I spend over half of my year out of the United States, and have spent much of my life either in India or Eastern Europe.  In fact much of what we generate on Yahoo, Amazon and Ebay goes to support The Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, as well as some other worthy institutions in Europe connected with Anthropology and Archaeology.

I acquire some small but interesting collections overseas from time-to-time, and have as well some duplicate items within my own collection which I occasionally decide to part with.  Though I have a collection of ancient coins numbering in the tens of thousands, my primary interest is in ancient jewelry.  My wife also is an active participant in the "business" of antique and ancient jewelry, and is from Russia.  I would be happy to provide you with a certificate/guarantee of authenticity for any item you purchase from me.  There is a $2 fee for mailing under separate cover.  Whenever I am overseas I have made arrangements for purchases to be shipped out via domestic mail.  If I am in the field, you may have to wait for a week or two for a COA to arrive via international air mail.  But you can be sure your purchase will arrive properly packaged and promptly - even if I am absent.  And when I am in a remote field location with merely a notebook computer, at times I am not able to access my email for a day or two, so be patient, I will always respond to every email.  Please see our "ADDITIONAL TERMS OF SALE."
